It is the time of the great conjunction on a distant planet. A shard must be replaced in the dark crystal that was damaged 1000 years before to release the planet of the control of the Skekses and end the age of chaos. Prophecy predicts that a Gelfling will replace this shard and heal the crystal, so the Skekses slayed all of the Gelflings. But at least one got away that they don't know about.
